US Navy base to produce own biofuel
A biodiesel production system that will enable the US Navy to produce its own sustainable fuel has been delivered to a base in South California, US. The system, which can produce around 3-10 million gallons of biofuel annually, is a result of a close partnership between Biodiesel Industries and Navy and aerospace technology company Aerojet. Together they have set up a production facility at the Naval Base Ventura County. The project is based around an ARIES biodiesel refinery – an automated real-time, remote energy system. The ARIES system uses control systems developed by Aerojet to provide real-time sensing and management of the biodiesel production process. Coupled with Biodiesel Industries’ production database, these systems allow for an automated process that will result in higher yields and better quality control. The biodiesel produced will replace the Naval base’s conventional diesel, as well as generating heat for use on the base. President and founder of Biodiesel Industries Russell Teall said: ‘The Integrated Energy System incorporated into ARIES will eventually allow us to generate our own heat and power, and to feed the surplus into a local micro-grid.’ Source http://www.biofuels-news.com/industry_news.php?item_id=1967May 22, 2012
