Germany to introduce E10
With a goal to slash CO2 emissions by 80% by the year 2050, Super E10 will be available to German drivers on 1 January 2011.
Super E10 is a biofuel with a higher ethanol content and is more environmentally friendly than E5, which is currently blended with conventional transport fuel.
According to the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), an estimated 90% of German automobiles will be compatible with the new fuel, while the remaining 10% will continue to run on E5 until it is phased out in 2013.
The initiative will see Germany conform to the EU directive looking to achieve GHG emission savings of 60% from 2018 onwards.
German drivers will have access to E10 at over 14,000 service stations across the country from 1 January.
